I'm not sure if being a naturopathic dermatologist is what I would need to be. I'm interested in studying natural skin care and creating remedies for it. The people are Burt's Bees, or Aubrey Organics, are they chemists? Dermatologists? What do I need to study to do this? Thanks!

Okay, so i want to start a skin care routine!! in the shower I wash my face with soap, and scrub my face with a sponge. then what should I do after? should I use a cleanser first? then exfoliate? and finally moisturize? oh and ps i have like oily skin. please leave a list of unisex-products products I can use. thank you all so much icon smile How do start a skin care routine for a guy?

Oh and really quick!! this is kindda important. is it okay to put body butters on your face?

Your puttin' to many things to Your Face , use The Cleanser only . if The Issue Is Pimples use toothpaste !

Soap = Bad for your face, tbh. And never scrub when it comes to wanting smooth skin, that will damage your skin ESPECIALLY if your skin is sensitive.

It's always good to have a simple cleanser at hands, usually use these in the morning when you wake up and at night before you go to bed.

Exfoliating may damage your skin so be careful.

If you have oily skin, moisturizing might not be the best idea. if you moisturize try and use one that's not strong, something just enough to give your skin a soft touch.

You may try things like Clean & clear, Neutrogena, etc.. They're all over commercials and T.V and are all very useful when wanting to cleanse your face!

Good-Luck! (:

I've been leaning towards vegetarianism for the past year and I've cut out meats. I would like to make the full transition to lacto-ovo-vegetarian, however, I am simply confused on what steps to take. What are some things I should simply avoid and what is the best vegetarian multivitamin?

Avoid meat
eat almonds and brazil nuts, lentils and tofu, spinach, broccoli, avocado, coconut, dates, chickpeas, raspberries, oats and papaya peaches and pumpkin.
and you do not need a dry pill.

TBH, i'm a little confused= you've already stopped the flesh eating, and you want to know what to avoid, sp yeh.

Gelatine is the biggie as it's in so many processed foods. Also look out for animal fat (lard) and red food colouring! do a google search of "non-vegetarian food additives" or something like that, as there are quite a few things to look out for.

look out for gelatin and anything flavored like meat (other than vegetarian meat substitutes) most likely has animal fat. most soups are made with chicken or beef broth, and some spaghetti sauces are made with meat.
also, being a vegetarian does not mean that you have to go out and eat a ridiculous amount of vegetables that most people haven't even heard of. there are plenty of meat substitutes that provide plenty of protein, Boca and Morningstar Farms have a great selection of meatless burger and chicken patties, hotdogs, corndogs, chicken nuggets and buffalo wings, and a LOT more, all completely vegetarian (and some are vegan) friendly.

as much as possible avoid animal meat and dairy.

You'll want to avoid meat, of course. but not necessarily. Today the word "vegetarian" covers a wide spectrum of diets: strict vegetarian, ovo lacto vegetarian, flexitarian, pesectarian, pollotarian, vegan, seagan, beegan, freegan…. Sort of makes you head spin. in fact, some are calling to just simplify the whole thing…no one sticks to it anyway….and replace all those "vegetarian" types with "veganish."

carpevegan.com/?p=1923

But don't make soy the basis of your diet. Yeah, it's tempting to eat a lot of fake soy burgers, hot dogs, etc., but soy can be quite harmful to your health. this guy, for example, grew man boobs and had serious sexual/emotional problems from soy:

menshealth.com/nutrition/soys…

Soy has also been tied to early puberty in girls and low sperm count in me. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has encouraged new mothers who can't nurse their babies to give them cows milk formula (not whole milk) instead of soy because of estrogen like hormones in soy milk. if you don't have thyroid disease or a family history of it, some soy is likely ok. Just don't build your diet around it.

Firstly in reference to Daisy, any link about such a big claim should not come from a magazine. secondly vegetarianism is quite simple you don't eat animals of any sort be it insects, land/sea based animals…….all those faux-labels are just that somebody looking for a title. I doubt the asker of this question like most of the population even knows what a pollotarian is.

Gelatine as pointed out is the biggie, there are vegetable sources that replace it such as pectin & on the ingredients it will say gelatine (bovine) + it cannot label its food vegetarian, obvious foods like fruit will not have vegetarian labels USUALLY. it is the half confusing ones like packaged meals will state if they are vegetarian
Rennet, its enzymes from cows stomach used to make cheese there are vegetarian types & it will state if so.

they are the two big ones that account for a good 40% of foods if not more, a google search will bring up a ton of additives that are/aren't vegetarian but that is really making things complicated. Just stick to the ''if it has vegetarian on it, its vegetarian'' rule of thumb & you're sorted.
As for multi-vitamins, not necessary. Vegetarian diets when done properly (ie not in a thick way like living off fruit or junk food) will provide you with every nutrient, beans/lentils/nuts are 3 big foods that vegetarians eat a fair bit of due to their high protein & healthy fats + energy content

What are some basic things I should know about vegetarianism?

Hi, we just adopted a new kitten last weekend. I haven't had a cat in over 10 years and the selection of food choices has changed dramatically! there is a local holistic pet food store in our neighborhood and I started there with their advice on the best diet to start off right (my previous cats became overweigt as they got older and had all kinds of digestive issues even with feeding "premium foods") anyway, the holistic store recommended a holistic grain free balanced dry and canned food for "all stages of life". it all made sense to me -and the feeding quantities/instructions were very detailed based on the stage of life (kittend, adult, etc.) my kitty loves the food, too! now the confusing part… just came from our first vet appointment and I just got a 20 minute "lesson" on why holistic foods were not the best choice… stating that cats need the grains for carbohydrates because they've evolved over hundreds of years and their digestive tracks aren't equal to a true carnivore. And that a kitten's nutrition needs are not the same as an adult cat and just feeding more of the same thing – as is what the all stages of life holistic food instructs – was not the same as feeding a specific food formulated for a kitten. The vet kept pushing Science Diet as the best possible food and diet out there citing all sorts of stats and research etc etc. She said that even though the holistic supporters are well intentioned, the people that really know whats best nutritionally are the people with the letters behind their names. She was so strong about it I almost got the impression she was getting kickbacks from Hills! I even left with a weeks supply sample of dry kitten and canned food. now I am totally confused! She also told me that Science Diet is the only brand out there that has never had a recall. Which a quick internet search proved her wrong which led me to this site. She also told me that the smaller companies that make the holistic foods may have more quality control issues and less control of the sources which makes them wide open to potential harmful ingrediants. I'm hoping someone has some insight! I really like the idea of the holistic grain free food but I certainly am not a vet and want to trust the experts. BUT who, really, is the expert? seems to be a very divided issue! thanks for any advice.

Oh, this is such crap! Cats are carnivores – they still have the short digestive tract that Nature gave them. The DO NOT need a ton of carbohydrates, especially corn. Your vet is looking to make a profit off of selling Science Diet to you. And it has nothing to do with "kitten formula" and everything to do with meat protein content. there is more meat protein in those premium foods than in the Science Diet, I guarantee that. Read the ingredients and analysis on the labels and decide for yourself. my foster kittens are all fed on premium all-stages foods and they thrive. And yes, Hills had a major recall several years back on their prescription foods when the corn gluten from China was tainted with Melamine, and caused the kidney failure of thousands of cats and dogs.

Your vet is just *so* misinformed. And they do get kickbacks from Hills. And who do you think teaches the one or two nutrition courses at the vet schools? Why, Hills representatives of course. I have a friend who's earned her Diplomat certification, and is both a teaching and practicing vet at one of the best vet schools in the country. Hills is in there all the time, and she could get any Hills product for practically free. And what does she feed her own cats? Not Hills. She feeds Wellness and Merrick Before Grain. I find that very significant.

Your instincts are right…the vets DO get a kick back for promoting SD pet food. Obviously, your vet has never read the ingredients in the food she's recommending because if she did she'd see that it is mostly corn and by products. Not very good ingredients for a carnivore. I am a demo person for a holistic pet food and I am amazed at the lack of knowledge vets have about what should and shouldn't be in our pet's food. But like your vet, I too am not a fan of 'all life stages' pet foods as I believe kittens and puppies need more protein and fat than those foods provide. But I definitely believe that your kitten will live a longer, happier life eating a food that has quality ingredients that are digestable and natural.. Congrats on the new kitten

I would guess that there have been recalls at one point or another on every brand of pet food. there was one of the flavors or Wellness a few months back because some lots had insufficient supplementation of a vitamin.
But I'd say ALL have had one or more recalls.

Science Diet! I am guessing that your vet does not get any kind of kickback but does purchase the product at a very high margin cost so she makes oodles of money promoting and selling it.

Science Diet is crappy food.

Cats are not true carnivores!? That is hilarious.
And evolution does not take place over "hundreds of years". That's the blink of an eye in the length of time a species exists. Evolution takes place slowly over thousands of years.

Cats are a recently domesticated animal. The earliest records of cats coexisting with humans are less than 10,000 years.
And for almost all of that 10,000 years cats have not been coddled pets but instead used for their ability to protect human food from the ravages of rodents….by eating them as carnivores that they are.

it is only in the past 80 or so years that there has been any commercial cat food. it was not created with cats' welfare in mind either. Someone had an idea of how to get rid of food waste unfit for human consumption thereby maximizing their profits – and the pet food industry was born.

now they'd have a way to make money off of all that inedible grain, diseased animal carcasses and so on!

And even still it did not catch on right away. When my very elderly mother was a child and a teen they always had one or more cats and dogs. did they buy pet foods/ No. They did what most people did. When they went to the butcher for their own meat they'd get a package of scraps for the cat and dog. plus the cat caught and ate mice, rats and whatever else.

"Evolution" certainly does NOT take place in 80 years even if domestic cats have in fact been eating commercial cat food all this time, which they have not.
there does not even exist such a thing in most parts of the world. Does your vet imagine that Indian and African villagers feed their cats Science Diet or another "cat food"?

Ugh. What a bunch of nonsense.

here is what I recommend. Feed your cat a wet diet either raw (commercial or homemade) or premium "holistic" canned.
A homemade raw diet is the least expensive option of those. it is more time-consuming though but you do have absolute control over what goes into your cat's food.
You need to do some research and ask more questions if you want to go this route.

for canned food some good brands are Wellness, Wellness Core, Merrick's, Before Grain, Natural Balance (it does have a small amount of rice), Blue Buffalo (their Wilderness line is their best), Fromm's 4-star, Evanger's (some have too much non-animal content). Choose those without fish or limit fish to occasional meals only.

Before getting into this discussion, let me give you my credentials. I worked as a Certified Veterinary Technician/ Internal Medicine Technician for 13 years, now retired. I also have a cat that I got while working as a CVT. She has a long history of food allergies and gut issues. So, I've both lived and worked this issue.

This is my perspective from a cat owner's point of view that has technical knowledge.
Yes the vets get a kickback from Hills. Hills food is crap. As is Royal Canin. While working as a CVT my cat was on both diets. because her food allergy is to chicken, I had to find a novel protein source that she wouldn't regurgitate. Thus started my years long search for a food she could eat. my cat was started on dry food as a kitten. we will discuss dry vs canned later.
As her food allergies presented, I started her on Royal Canin venison and potato dry. She loved it. unfortunately, it only came in 8# bags and even with freezing I was throwing half the bag away because it would go stale. At $40 a bag that was a huge waste of money. then without warning they changed the formula from potato to pea. As soon as I opened the bag, she refused to eat it. I had to start her on canned food.
When she was on dry food, she would drink a full bowl of water each day. She had no problems with bowel movements. When she went strictly to a canned diet, she would drink NO water at all and became severely constipated. I had to mix increasing amounts of laxatives into her food to keep her going. At one point she became emaciated. This was over years I dealt with this. Finally several years ago, I decided to put her back on a dry diet. Once I started her back on dry food, she started drinking water again and she needed no more laxatives.
But, I couldn't get a bag of food from either Hills or Royal Canin that wasn't stale when I opened the bag. She puked every time she ate it or refused it outright.
Thus started my search for a single protein source food over the counter that she could eat.
I started her with Katzenflocken because it had no chicken. then after a year and a half on that food, the next time I went to buy a bag, it said it had chicken in it. I had to scramble to find a food she could eat. I found Natures Recipe by Dick Van Patten. When I found it they had venison, salmon, rabbit and duck as their protein sources. now they only have the salmon and duck. So again, I am fighting a losing battle over cat food.
As to the canned vs dry debate, each cat has to be fed individually. Some cats will thrive on a strictly canned diet, some will not. my cat is doing great since she is on a strictly dry diet.

One other thing I would like to address with you briefly is the water your cat drinks.
Domestic cats as a species in whole are prone to urinary issues. I have no scientific evidence to back up what I am about to say, but I firmly believe that many of the issues with cat's urinary problems is the water they drink. if the water from your faucet is very hard (as evidenced by the mineral build up around the faucet) I believe that that directly correlates to urinary problems. if the minerals build up around the faucet, the same would be true of the cats 'plumbing'. my cat has only ever gotten bottled water. if my family won't drink the tap water, neither will my cat. in 13 years she has only had one minor UTI, when she was 2. Again, I have no scientific studies to back this up, but only my own observations.
I hope this has given you some good information.

Have there ever been any recalls on holistic cat food?

Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins :

1. every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer
cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have
multiplied to a few billion. when doctors tell cancer patients
that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after
treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the
cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable
size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a
person's lifetime.

3. when the person's immune system is strong the cancer
cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and
forming tumors.

4. when a person has cancer it indicates the person has
nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic,
but also to environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing
diet to eat more adequately and healthy, 4-5 times/day
and by including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing
cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells
in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc, and can
cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7.. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars
and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often
reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of
chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor
destruction.

9. when the body has too much toxic burden from
chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either
compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb
to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to
mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy.
Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other
sites.

*CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made
with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute
would be Manuka honey or molasses, but only in very small
amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in
color better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

B. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the
gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. by cutting
off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer
cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based
diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little other meat,
like chicken. Meat also contains livestock
antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all
harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole
grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into
an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked
food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live
enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to
cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance
growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building
healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most
vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw
vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at
temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C)..

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high
caffeine Green tea is a better alternative e and has cancer
fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or
filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap
water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of
digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the
intestines becomes putrefied and leads to more toxic
buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By
refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes
to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the
body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. some supplements build up the immune system
(IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals,
EFAs etc.) to enable the bodies own killer cells to destroy
cancer cells.. other supplements like vitamin E are known
to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's
normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or
unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit.

Yes, thank you, and gracious of you to offer it. I'm on the Hopkins mailing list, but had opted out of the Cancer category. Copied this and sent it to myself in my main email.

Yes, thanks Pat. A good reminder to get the juicer out of the cupboard, especially with all the fresh organic produce available right now.

No, but apparently I have no choice.

I think someday they are going to discover that cancer is hereditary in white mice and we gave all these things up for nothing. I have friends of mine that are strict vegetarians. I went out to a Vietnamese restaurant with them two or three years ago and it looked like they were eating grass, and the bill come to over $50.00 for just my date and I. I thought, hell, they could have chowed down in my back yard for free. I wouldn't have charged them anything. and they look like crap. She looks emaciated and so does he, plus they look 20 years older than my date and I. and they are almost evangelical in their vegetarianism. They always sound like the newly converted. Always extolling the virtues of eating healthy and not eating meat. I thought I would rather have my steak and die young than eat grass and live long. what kind of life is that?

I think stress is the main factor in so many illnesses. It is hard to control that, even though it is known to cause a lot of diseases. I do not care for meat, though, and never drank artificial sweetener, cannot tolerate dairy, so gave it up. I take vitamin D with C, two tablets daily. It helps fight colon cancer and osteoporosis. Thank you for this. I used to get these.

One of my friends is looking for colleges that have holistic health as a major, but she wants to be able to live there and not have to commute. if anyone knows any good colleges please write them here

Which Colleges Have Holistic Health as a major?

I have never heard the term holistic cure.

Chronic Yeast Infections and Yeast Syndrome

Very often chronic yeast infections develop into yeast syndrome due to resistance to certain drugs. The whole system is then compromised to the extent that many opportunistic diseases afflict the person.

The word Holistic is derived from the word whole hence (w)holistic therefore holistic. Treatment should be approached by considering all possible areas of the disease.

In the case of the diseases, let's take yeast infection as an example, you have to examine all possible areas like the immune system(lowered resistance to infections), nervous system(depression), genitourinary system(vaginal yeast infections) and so on.

In addition you have to consider all forms of treatment like detoxification (parasite cleansing), immune fortification (taking antioxidants), lifestyle behavior (exercise) and natural (taking tea tree oil) and pharmaceutical (taking fluconazole) medicine.

Natural health practitioners and nutritionists are usually the people who are more likely to treat disease holistically. they usually also write books to encourage patients to take their health into their own hands. unlike conventional doctors who mostly use chemical based medicine which often treat symptoms rather than the whole body system.

You need to surf the internet for books and ebooks. I found good ebooks or guides with on-going programs on websites to be super helpful.

Earlier I also did'nt know what holistic means but when I searched the net and from the website apnidukaanse.com/tag I found that this is now a preferred natural ways or you may say alternative ways to cure medical problems.
